About Thessaloniki

Greece's second city, with some 3,000 years of history visible in Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman remains; its Byzantine churches are on the UNESCO World Heritage list. A big student population keeps the waterfront and food scene busy. Population: about 309,617 (2021).

Getting in from the airport

Thessaloniki 'Macedonia' (SKG) is 15 km south of the centre, with many low-cost routes (Ryanair has a base) plus Aegean and Sky Express domestic flights. Bus 01X runs around the clock (01N at night) to the railway station and intercity bus terminal, about 40 minutes for €2.
