About Tulum
A Caribbean beach town on the Yucatán Peninsula, known for its clifftop Maya ruins over the sea and the cenotes inland. It is busy: tour buses from Cancún and Playa del Carmen reach the ruins mid-morning, so going at opening time pays off.
When to go
Tropical all year; the drier months are the busiest. Summer and autumn are the rainy, hurricane-prone part of the year.
Getting in from the airport
Tulum International (TQO) opened in December 2023 near Felipe Carrillo Puerto, with domestic links to Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara and direct flights from several US and Canadian cities. Many travellers still compare fares into Cancún (CUN), further north.
