About Tromsø
A small city roughly 350 km north of the Arctic Circle, and one of the best-known bases for watching the Northern Lights. It is livelier than its size suggests, with museums, food and nightlife surrounded by fjords and mountains. Population: about 79,943 (2026).
When to go
Winter is milder than the latitude implies thanks to the Gulf Stream (January averages around -4 °C) with deep snow from December into May; that is aurora season and the busiest time for winter routes. Summer is cool (July around 11 °C) and has its own cheaper fares, usually in July and August.
Getting in from the airport
Tromsø Airport, Langnes (TOS) is small and close to the city. About ten daily flights come from Oslo, and winter adds direct routes from several UK and German cities. Airport buses and taxis cover the short ride into the centre.
