About New Orleans
Louisiana's largest city and the birthplace of jazz, shaped by French, Spanish and African-American culture. Most visits centre on the French Quarter and the music clubs around it. Population: about 383,997 (2020).
When to go
From late April to early October it is hot, humid and often stormy, and that stretch overlaps hurricane season. Winters are short and mild. Mardi Gras (February/March) and Jazz Fest (late April-May) are the peaks: rooms need booking well ahead.
Getting in from the airport
Louis Armstrong International (MSY) is in Kenner, west of the city. Taxis charge a flat fare to the French Quarter and the CBD; the RTA 202 Airport Express bus takes about 30 minutes to the edge of the French Quarter for a fraction of the price.
